700 unique games + NES goodness

I just passed the 700 unique video game mark. Go me!
Sadly, that means that I have games scattered everywhere, especially with the eBay business being centered on games. Games. Games. Games.

In any case, I did want to share a particularly good NES find. As you can see from the auction, there’s no pics and the seller had 0 feedback when I won. So I took a chance. My bet was that the info was too detailed to be a scam; it would be an awful lot of trouble to type it up. Of course, it could have been ripped from somewhere, but I decided to go for it.

Smart move.

I paid just under $200 for the whole shebang, and I was utterly amazed at what I got. I’ve posted pics, but the pics don’t do the winnings justice. This was an absolutely amazing lot of well kept NES goodness. Really - I’m surprised this wasn’t a collector of some sort (could be, but most collectors would have realized that this would have been worth more).

Look at all those Nintendo Powers. Ranging from the 20s to the 70s. I plugged a few holes in my collection and then eBayed the rest. In addition, there were a number of old NES strategy guides that I didn’t have and a whole load of random old gaming mags that I certainly didn’t have (nor had heard of). Needless to say, those went into my collection.

Boxed peripherals! Wow. Boxed. And a Donkey Kong Country promo VHS! Holy crap. Of course, we can’t forget the nonpictured NES in a BOX. It’s the sports action set complete with four-player adapter. Mmmm… I really want to keep the box…

And then there’s the Nintendo Power binder. A binder! How cool would that have been to lug to school? And in the binder was goodness. Cutouts from the Super Mario CEREAL. Yes, the cereal - these cutouts are for gameplay tips, so I guess he wanted to keep those. Also included was a buttload of random NES… well, stuff. Posters. Advertisements. Catalogs. Letters from game companies!

The guy was apparently on some really sweet mailing lists as the Final Fantasy poster (how I have wanted one of these forever!) shows. Also note the Illusion of Gaia mailer. Squaresoft apparently produced some promotional comics for Breath of Fire and Final Fantasy III. These things rock. Don’t forget the random stuff either - a Nintendo sticker book and two Zelda comic books!

And finally, the games. Gauntlet II. Shadowgate. Zelda I and II. Final Fantasy. Ultima: Exodus. Swords and Serpents. Dragon Warrior I, II, III, and holy freaking IV. There were a few more - but those that I just listed are complete. COMPLETE: boxes/Styrofoam/inserts/manuals/maps/sleeves and in some cases, random extras that game companies sent him. I nearly wept. Oh yeah, and the rarer than crap Dragon Warrior IV strategy guide.

I have an excellent addition to my collection in these. I’m keeping every complete game that I didn’t already have - despite the fact that Final Fantasy and the Dragon Warriors alone are worth what I paid for the whole thing. This is one of those rare instances where I’m keeping more than I’m selling - stuff like this just doesn’t come along that often.

If those are Game Players on top of that magazine stack (and I know they are), know that you have a buyer who pays absurd amounts for magazines he doesn’t have.

    Hint, hint…

And that Dragon Warrior 4 is NICE. It’s the only one in the series I don’t have.

On September 13th, 2005 at 12:08 am - 7 hours, 4 minutes after having done “things” illegal in most states - a wicked forager who is trying to engulf the world in flames, having made 141 purposeless manifestos before declaring everyone else insane, flourishing the oafish Opera 8.02 on Windows XP and whose name must not be spoken Evil Overlord, took an oath saying:

    Lol, Matt.

Yeah, they’re Game Players; 15 issues ranging from vol 1,2 to 4,11. I didn’t even know they existed. They’re not in the greatest of shape though, doesn’t look like they were bound to stand the test of time.

Also in that lot were some Consumer Guide and early GamePros.

I’ve kept all of those since (unlike the NinPowers) I didn’t have any of them in my collection. I am unfortunately somewhat reluctant to let rare items out of my grasp, but a sufficient offer might make me change my mind. :)

And yeah, the DW set is sweet. All complete. All mint. One fell swoop. I had only had the first (IE, the common one) before this, so I am much happy. Some sweet DW extras too. I had this crazy desire to drive to AZ and meet this guy because he had so much cool stuff.

We’ll discuss this “sufficient offer” at a later date. Like after the 360 launch… when I have cash again.

Lol. Yeah, that 360 will be putting a significant dent in many a pocket. Not mine though. I have a relatively firm rule about not buying cutting edge (expensive) technology.

Well, I’ll keep these mags for now and try not to forget which box I stored them in. :)
