Just a few small notes on what I found amusing for April Fools Day. Mostly gaming related.
Over at RPGamer.com we tried a number of things, foremost changing the header image to reflect our new orientation as a Harvest Moon site. Keep checking back on “Another Wonderful Site.”
We also posted a story about Jack Thompson suing you.
And, of course, there were spoof reviews, including mine on The War Against the Grammar Nazis.
The greatest site for game collecting aficionados, Digit Press, added an automatic filter in their forums. Normally such is used to filter out profanity and replace it with some innocuous. Not DP. All instanced of “collection” were replaced with “genitalia.” As you can imagine, there’s quite a number of spots on the forums that looked quite funny. Many, many signatures now advertised, asking people to check out “my genitalia.” A few other changed filters, but that was the most amusing.
Gamespot does a top ten Final Fantasy games list. The list itself is more amusing than the writing, and someone has an obvious grudge against FFVIII. But still fun to see what they picked as #1.
ArsTechnica does a review of Duke Nukem Forever, the biggest piece of vaporware (this side of the Phantom) in existence.
GameFAQs sports an anti-cheating logo, story with images covered by Joystiq. They were taken down by the ACAA - Anti-Cheating Association of America.
Thinkgeek sells a grow-your-own-1up-kit. They also have wireless power adapters.
Non-gaming.
Microsoft buys OpenOffice.
Saying he “was sick and tired of open-source eating away at his profits,” the world’s richest man decided to put an end to the nuisance and simply buy OpenOffice.org. It will form part of a growing list of Microsoft acquisitions, including several erstwhile competitors, a considerable number of prominent politicians, and a few small governments.
Slashdot sports a new, woman-friendly pink theme. Stating their membership at 98.3% male, a number of stories abounded about ponies and cute stuff.
And probably the most amusing was Google’s launch of Google Romance. Very, very amusing.
Wikipedia has a massive list of all April 1 jokes in 2006. It’s nuts.
